International School Kumbakonam - Karthi Vidhyalaya International ICSE School

Qualitative and quantitative data is used to begin to understand the impact this program has on the students attending. Looking at qualitative data, students as part of their program write and submit thank you letters to Drexel for their visits. These letters provide qualitative data about what stands out for students participating as well as what they remember after the visit. Many letters mention the type of activity and that the student hada good time, “I liked the activity...the speaker actually worked using only plates, magnets, wire, index cards and tape”, “The sling experiment was pretty cool. My group made a splint out of markers, gimp and yarn. I found the outcome to be successful” and“I learned a lot about biomedical engineering. I liked learning about the robotic leg...”. Others included moreelaborate and insightfulcomments things such as “I enjoyed making them [speakers] and have thought about ways I could improve it at home”, “My experience... has allowed me to study things beyond the classroom. For example, after our trip, I further researched capillary action and shared what I learned with my peers back at school”, “Everything you showed us further solidified my interest in engineering”, and “I feltlike I was an actual engineer”.These are only a few of many responses received from participants. Overall the responses indicate that students remember the experience ingreatdetail, have thought about the experience after the visit, and in some cases the visit helped solidify the students’ interest in engineering.

Recently, a survey was developed to begin to look more specifically at program outcomes. Surveys included questions on grade level and gender, they included open-ended questions such as ‘what did you like most about today?’ and ‘what would you change?’ They also asked more targeted questions to help understand the knowledge that the students have about engineering and how that knowledge changes over time. Questions such as ‘What is engineering? In 2 sentences explain what engineering is.’ And ‘What qualities do engineers have?’Students were also asked to indicate how much their confidence in problem solving, and ability to brainstormimproved or got worse.
